The days have already come when both have been forgotten. What then do I gain by being wise?” ( AP)ġ6 For the wise, like the fool, will not be long remembered ( AQ) “The fate of the fool will overtake me also. ( AH) In all this my wisdom stayed with me. 9 I became greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem ( AG) before me. ( AE) I acquired male and female singers, ( AF) and a harem as well-the delights of a man’s heart. 8 I amassed silver and gold ( AD) for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces. I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me. 7 I bought male and female slaves and had other slaves ( AC) who were born in my house. 6 I made reservoirs to water groves of flourishing trees. ( AB) 5 I made gardens and parks and planted all kinds of fruit trees in them. I wanted to see what was good for people to do under the heavens during the few days of their lives.Ĥ I undertook great projects: I built houses for myself ( AA) and planted vineyards. And what does pleasure accomplish?” 3 I tried cheering myself with wine, ( Y) and embracing folly ( Z)-my mind still guiding me with wisdom. ( V) Pleasures Are MeaninglessĢ I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure ( W) to find out what is good.” But that also proved to be meaningless. ( P)ġ8 For with much wisdom comes much sorrow ( U) ( N) What a heavy burden God has laid on mankind! ( O) 14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind. ( M) 13 I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens. ( K) Wisdom Is Meaninglessġ2 I, the Teacher, ( L) was king over Israel in Jerusalem. What has been done will be done again ( I)ġ0 Is there anything of which one can say,ġ1 No one remembers the former generations, ( J)īy those who follow them. 9 The increase from the land is taken by all the king himself profits from the fields.3 What do people gain from all their labors ( H) Riches Are MeaninglessĨ If you see the poor oppressed ( I) in a district, and justice and rights denied, do not be surprised at such things for one official is eyed by a higher one, and over them both are others higher still. And do not protest to the temple messenger, “My vow was a mistake.” Why should God be angry at what you say and destroy the work of your hands? 7 Much dreaming and many words are meaningless. ( G) 6 Do not let your mouth lead you into sin.
( F) 5 It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it. ( E) He has no pleasure in fools fulfill your vow. ( D)Ĥ When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it. 3 A dream ( C) comes when there are many cares,Īnd many words mark the speech of a fool.
